Club Night: Usually held the second Saturday of each month. Entertainment in the first half is provided by local artists performing two items each. This is invariably an eclectic mix of musical style and genres, including unaccompanied singers, song- writers, solo performers, groups and a wide range of musical instruments. Then comes supper (which is included in the admission charge) followed by the featured guest artist(s) who play for around 45 minutes after the supper break. These acts will either be drawn from the finest of the New Zealand acoustic music scene or will be visiting overseas performers. They may be solo or group acts and the styles of music will vary each month – from a capella to Appalachian; from ballads to blues; from harmony to humour; and everything in between.

Floor singers first half. Tea and coffee available. Admission $15, members $10, under 18 free.

Sonia and Nigel are a multi-cultural acoustic duo featuring French-American Paris-born Sonia Wilson on vocals & ukulele and Kiwi-American virtuoso musician Nigel Gavin on 7-string guitar. After meeting and playing together for the first time at the Whare Flat Folk festival in Dunedin during Sonia’s first visit to New Zealand on a solo round-the-world trip in December 2014, the pair have since become a well-loved duo in the New Zealand folk music scene. They weave French, Kiwi and American songs with their own original compositions and inspiration from their travels around the world.

After a North Island tour in January with Sonia's parents visiting from France & a feature at the 2024 Auckland Folk Festival, the Sonia & Nigel duo is back for a musical visit to Christchurch on their way from the Lunasa Festival on Takaka Hill to play Live At The Point in Diamond Harbour and at the Grand Hotel in Akaroa, after a successful South Island tour last year yielded various repeat invitations.

We are very grateful to be back in Canterbury and look forward to inviting various local musician friends to the stage with us. Thanks to Dave Mitchell for his help with planning this soirée... We have new songs to share and look forward to seeing you there!

Early bird tickets are available online for $20 or $25 on the door ($20 unwaged and gold card).

Sonia & Nigel are looking forward to returning to Kaikoura, New Zealand on Thursday 8th Feb to share a special Ukulele-themed soirée at the Mayfair Theatre, consisting of a multi-level uke workshop and Q&A from 5 to 6pm (listed separately in the Shows section), followed by a Sonia & Nigel concert at 7.30pm! Tickets for the concert are available online here: https://www.themayfair.org.nz/movie/the-sonia--nigel-home-is-where-the-heart-is-tour

A few years ago, in September 2021, we were lucky enough to chance upon the 1st (and only?) edition of the Kaikōura Ukefest and had such a blast sharing our music there as a very last-minute add-on to the performers list. Here's a video with some excerpts from our main set there: https://fb.watch/pTihq6e0EB/

Since then our Sonia & Nigel duo has released a French book & album called "Sweet Paname", acquired a website sonianigelmusic.com and toured quite extensively around the North and South islands of Aotearoa all the way to Stewart Island! We look forward to sharing our stories and songs with you & hearing some of yours... Please do help us spread the word 🎶❤️🎶 Merci beaucoup & see you very soon! xoxo

Concert tickets are $30 each or $50 Combo with the workshop added in (workshop alone is $25) Concession prices available at this link: https://ticketing.oz.veezi.com/purchase/11756?siteToken=vwspsyw0dcthvna58h9tf6w9bm

Sonia and Nigel duo

"Sonia Wilson is a living, breathing human Womad Festival. Born and raised in Paris, UK-educated and now based in Auckland, the Franco-American singer, songwriter and musician had a dizzying musical apprenticeship. A member of both gospel and Acapella choirs from a young age, her music has taken her from the streets of Paris, across the Kenyan savannah, through remote Himalayan villages, and then ’home’ to New Zealand. When she’s not performing, Sonia teaches, offering classes in individual and group ukulele, guitar and vocals." (Peter Malcouronne, Ockham Collective)

https://ockhamcollective.org.nz/r-sonia-wilson

Nigel Gavin is a multi award winning musician. Initially a visitor from Long Island, New York, now a resident, Nigel has long been a featured player in New Zealand’s music scene, playing 7 string guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass - indeed, almost anything with strings - with the Nairobi Trio, the Fondue Set, the Jews Brothers, the Blue Bottom Stompers, Lorina Harding, Wayne Gillespie, Whirimako Black, Jonathan Besser & Bravura among others. He has also found time to create and mentor the multi-guitar ensemble Gitbox Rebellion. Gavin is a guitarist with remarkable versatility who is respected by other players around the world, and who excites audiences with jaw-dropping solos. He continues to work internationally in New Zealand, Europe, Australia and the United States.
